Definition: AREAS is a function that returns the number of areas in a reference.

Syntax: =AREAS(reference)

Situation: This formula is suitable when you need to count the number of areas in a range.

Example: If you have a range with two non-contiguous areas (e.g. A1:A10 and C1:C10), the formula =AREAS(A1:C10) returns a value of 2.
